My ideal first date

What would be your ideal first date?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

Okay, so full disclosure for those of you that won’t click the link above at some point, the original prompt for today asked “how was your first kiss” but they offered an alternative. I didn’t have a good answer for the original prompt because I honestly don’t recall much of that moment (it was nothing exciting or else I totally would remember) so I opted for the alternate prompt.

Sadly, I don’t have a great answer for this prompt, either, but I’ll give it a shot.

My standards for dating have changed as I’ve gotten older. I’ve learned things about myself and how others might enjoy their time in my presence, and vice versa, so that I can at least make a better attempt at a solid first date experience.

I think that, since dating is about getting to know someone better, going to a place where we can be interactive with one another is key. That being said, I wouldn’t be opposed to dinner and a movie, if we did things in a different order. Go to the movie first, then dinner after so we can discuss it and see where the conversation goes. I know that isn’t particularly exciting, as far as first dates go, but I think it would work out better.

Anyways, back to the interactivity aspect. There are tons of places you can consider, depending on how much time you’re looking to spend together for a first date, and time of day. A quick lunch or coffee at one of the places downtown? Or maybe dinner followed by drinks and axe throwing? I’ve never actually been axe throwing, so that might be fun. Not sure if it’s first date material, though.

After thinking through this a bit while writing, I still don’t know that I have a solid idea. It’s a first date, so it’s not like I would be trying to show off and be classy by going to a super fancy restaurant or something. So, maybe my ideal first date would be something rather more cliché like bowling? I’m half decent at bowling, so it works for me.

I should set a goal for 2025 to get out more and maybe actually go on a couple of dates.

A quick look at the start of the new year

Happy January 1st! What has already gone wrong today, and what has gone right?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

It’s been a whopping 13 hours of 2025 so far, and I’m just getting up. Mind you, I woke up and took my meds on time, but then afterwards I went back to sleep. I reset my alarm for a couple hours later but obviously the thing that went wrong is that it didn’t work. It’s now about 1:00pm as I write this up. Oops.

Even though I didn’t wake up quite when I wanted to, something good did happen! Late last night I had sent a message to a fancy restaurant I had been to in Savannah. They had a mezcal cocktail on their menu that I really enjoyed, and I wanted to try making it for myself. So, I contacted them to see if they would share the ingredients and preparation method. To my surprise, they did! To be honest, I don’t drink very often. Alcohol isn’t something I typically care to have, in part because I don’t like the way it can make me feel (like getting a wine headache after a small glass). Mezcal, in particular, is also kind of expensive relative to other kinds that would get used in cocktails, and anywhere here that carries it doesn’t carry a wide selection.

Anyways, time to get about my day because my vacation is almost over. Back to work tomorrow!

Happy New Year!

Looking toward a new tomorrow in 2025

What are you going to do differently tomorrow?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

Tomorrow is the first day of 2025, and looking at the last, I don’t know, 20 years? Nothing will magically change because of the change in the calendar year from 2024.

Tomorrow is just another day.

What will I do differently tomorrow as opposed to any other “tomorrow”? Probably nothing! At least not in the immediate term.

Happy New Years, everyone! For those who are big on making New Years Resolutions, I wish you luck in keeping to them.

A teensy glimpse back through the year

Suppose you had not used a planner or journal this year. How do you think your life would be different?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

First off, I didn’t really use a planner or journal in the traditional sense. I guess you could say I used the Tasks app on my phone like a planner since it helped me keep an eye on my daily to-do’s (like taking my meds) while also using it as a grocery list because I can have multiple unique task lists going simultaneously by just flipping through them as needed. Sadly, one of the ones I had originally deemed as an important reminder kept being forgotten. Oops.

On the journal side of things, I guess you could say I’ve been treating my blog here as a journal? I’ve been primarily using it as a thought outlet for daily writing prompts, answering all kinds of questions (like this one) and only sort of using it to talk about my creative writing endeavors.

So, looking back through the year, had I not done either of those things, how WOULD my life have been different?

I suppose it’s possible that if the journal/blogging aspect of my time had been missing I may have fallen into a different kind of mental slump. I’d have just filled that time with gaming or staring at my monitor not knowing what to do with myself.

For the planner aspect, I suppose I would have tried to adjust my routine and habits for taking my meds on time, but not by much, and everything else in my daily planner-style to-do lists would have probably gone on sticky notes that would get ignored (because I have a habit of doing that.)

That’s how I see it having gone, at least. I could be wrong.

2025 might be a different year for planning/journaling, though, so we’ll see if I do better or worse.

Having all of something

If you could have the full range of something, what would you choose? (e.g. all 108 tombow dual brush pen colours)

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

Well, this is an easy question for me to answer.

Magic: The Gathering cards!

There are probably close to 30,000 unique cards in the game, and some of them can’t be acquired easily (if at all) anymore, and I would love to be able to have some of them to play with. Especially some of the ones on the Reserved List. I was lucky enough to buy a copy of a card called “Serra’s Sanctum” close to a decade ago for something like $30 and in that time it’s risen to around $300.

So, yes, I would love to have one of every kind of Magic cards.

Watching something over and over

Think of a movie, TV show, or book that you consume over and over again. What do you like about it?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

It’s been a very long time since I found a movie that I could watch over and over again.

Until some time near the beginning of the year when I decided to take a chance and watch Bullet Train on Netflix. After that first watch, I sat and let my mind digest it for probably a week before I decided to watch it again because it’s just such a fun ride of a movie (although, warning, it has lots of action and some gore/blood…maybe this warning should have come up earlier in the post but oh well) and then I watched it a few more times over the coming months. I also pestered friends and family to watch it so I could actually TALK to someone about how much I enjoyed it.

I might have to go watch it again later tonight.

The desire to fall

What is something you have always wanted to do? What would be the first step in making that happen?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

Something I’ve always wanted to try doing is skydiving. I’m not exactly a thrill seeker, but it seems like it would be an amazing experience. That, and I’ve had plenty of dreams where I’m falling through the sky but have no fear, or I have lucid dreaming experiences where I can make myself fly.

I just want to experience at least once, even if I have to do it tandem with an instructor.

One of the first steps is to research places that offer it, and I guess I’ve done that before, but never actually called to schedule anything. Some friends and I had joked about going when we all met in San Diego back in 2019, but that never happened.

I think what will have to happen is that I just do it on my own (with an instructor, like I mentioned before) and not worry about going with anyone. I’ll have to wait and see what comes up when the weather warms up, though, because it’s winter now and I’m NOT jumping out of a plane when it’s this cold out. Maybe around June I’ll call some places and see what’s available.

A favorite food that I need to restrain myself around

What is a food you will always overeat, no matter what?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

Yesterday I took a peek at what my prompt for today would be, and seeing this one made me pause and think about a larger problem I have.

I just love food in general! I have bad habits about sometimes skipping meals so I can eat a larger meal later, and then I run into problems like overeating because I forget how many calories some foods can have, or their macro nutrient balance.

However, taking a more focused look at what foods I like and which ones I really do overeat every single time? It’s probably ice cream.

See, I can’t grab a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream from the store and just eat the recommended serving size. I will, without fail, eat the entire pint in a single sitting. In fact, I bought two pints of their ice cream before I went on my vacation, and they sat in the freezer for a week waiting for me. Want to know what happened? I ate them both within 24 hours of each other. One at about midnight on Christmas Eve, and the other the evening of Christmas. One of those pints, according the nutrition label, is 1,210 calories for the whole container. And I demolished it while playing Phasmophobia with my family.

Granted, this happens when I buy my own ice cream from the grocery store, but if I were out and about doing things like hanging out with friends or family and we went out to eat? I wouldn’t be getting ice cream for dessert every single time. In fact, I rarely order dessert at all when I go out to eat, so it really is just a problem for when I decide to buy a pint of ice cream to stow away in the freezer.

The biggest global event in my lifetime

From your view, what is the biggest global event that happened in your lifetime? Thoughts?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

It’s hard for me to really say which events are considered global, because sometimes there are things that happen domestically that have global impacts, but I don’t know if those would qualify?

If they do, I’d probably say 9/11. I was only in middle school when it happened but I recall watching the news coverage live from my school library.

Traveling has never been the same since then.

Maximizing a pizza

Suppose you could make your own pizza with unlimited free toppings. What would you pick to maximize the value, while not compromising on taste and integrity of the pizza?

https://thecoffeemonsterzco.com/blogs/midnight-blogging/journaling-prompts

There’s a lot to consider with this prompt. Depending on the crust and baking method, you could really mess this up!

I suppose something else to consider is if you’re ordering this pizza or making it yourself at home with whatever equipment you have at your disposal.

That being said, MY two key takeaways from the prompt are centered around the integrity. Add too many solid/dense toppings and you run the risk of underbaking the crust. Add too much cheese and/or greasy toppings and the pizza turns into a puddle of grease. You have to strike a good balance.

To answer the prompt about picking toppings to maximize value? Probably lots of cheese and bacon on a thick crust, baked extra long to make certain the crust is fully baked and sturdy enough for the impending deluge of greasy goodness. Just keeping it simple.
