Something memorably delicious

What’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever eaten?

As much as I like food, I can’t say I recall specific memories of eating something that was (in the moment) the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten.

I’m a notorious sweet tooth, or at least I used to be, but I also love savory and herbaceous things. It’s hard to decide which direction to go because both sides offer different experiences, and even within those two flavor profiles you can have dramatically different styles. I’ve had some amazing stuffing/dressing on Thanksgiving. I’ve also had some amazing Tiramisu.

If I had to pick something, it would be something more nostalgic than anything. In that case, I would land on the breakfast burrito I loved growing up in Colorado. I recently went back and was able to have one for the first time in YEARS and it was just as good as I remembered it being even though they recently went through a change in ownership.

I wish I knew the secret recipe to those burritos. I might just have to go visit again and see if I can try to figure out the flavors and ingredients. Good thing I’m going back in the near future!

Childhood Nostalgia: Food Edition

Daily writing prompt
Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?

Growing up, my family was fortunate enough to have Schwan’s in the area. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a frozen food delivery service. They drive around in these utility type trucks decked out with coolers/freezers and emblazoned with company logos and art. You could either call them up and place an order or schedule a monthly or weekly stop where they come to your home, hand you a magazine of products for you to select from, and then give you whatever you want so long as it was on the truck. (It wasn’t cheap, mind you, but not exorbitantly expensive like today’s food delivery services that took over the gig work industry during and after the pandemic.) We didn’t order/buy from them very frequently because of the cost, but there were a select few items that we would get once or twice a year (I did say not very frequently) and those were a kind of highlight to my childhood, at least when it came to food.

The one item that would top the list of foods that transport me to my childhood, the thing I enjoyed most often from those Schwan’s trucks, was those little single-serve vanilla ice cream cups that had a swirl of strawberry. Those cups that come with the little wood spoon. I still see them around today, and have even had little flashbacks just from LOOKING at them.

It’s not like they were a staple food/dessert/treat of my childhood, but my family loved those little cups of frozen joy.

Small things add up

Daily writing prompt
What’s one small improvement you can make in your life?

There are so many different things I could change in my life that would be improvements. If I were to look at them the way I normally do, I wouldn’t be able to stick to them because I have a problem with that.

For instance, take the idea of “eating better/healthier” and trying to treat that in its entirety as a small improvement. The idea is simple enough to follow and seems like it could be a small thing to do but we often take for granted what our relationship with food is even like. How much thought do you put into what you’re eating?

I’ve gone through different phases of eating healthier and trying do things differently for weight management. I’ve seen success with some, while others I failed miserably with. Although the thought of eating better is simple, it means a change in lifestyle. You have to identify many more changes than you expect when trying to make a “small improvement” related to food. Source and acquisition. Quantities and preparation methods. Storage. So, rather than trying to treat something that is actually much larger as a “small improvement” one thing I’ve been slowly trying to integrate into my life in an attempt to modify my lifestyle towards eating better is simply just “eat some veggies” or “have some fruit” in addition to the other things I eat.

It doesn’t matter that I might be adding more calories to my meals, I just need to add better sources of nutrition to those meals. Then when I’ve made that a consistent thing I can move on to the next small improvement.

Where I like to eat

What is your favorite restaurant?

Alright, first thing, this sounds like another one of those prompts that sounds like a security question for your account and the information could be used maliciously if someone decides to scrape blog posts.

If you’re curious how that could work, I couldn’t explain it properly, but the idea would be to scan blogs for the Tag that corresponds to this prompt, making a note of them and any public information, and then scanning the actual blog post to find words that match a database of restaurant names. Boom, list of names/emails and favorite restaurants. Pair that with information from other sources (like those companies that sell your information) and you have potential for security breaches.

NOW, with that warning out of the way, I’ll answer today’s prompt in a roundabout way.

My favorite restaurants (plural) are typically places where I can get fried rice or tacos/burritos.

When I get food from a place that does fried rice it’s usually ordered with some kind of chicken dish or with a fair amount of sauce to drizzle over the rice.

When I’m craving tacos or burritos it is hit and miss where I go because sometimes it isn’t about either of them, but rather something like a really good dessert. I’m a sucker for a good churro or slice of tres leches, so when I’m in the mood for those I definitely don’t go to Taco Bell.

(For the record, I mentioned Taco Bell because I know I’ve never used that as the answer to a security question.)

Anyways, that’s where I’m at when it comes to restaurants. I’ll eat just about anywhere, but those two particular categories are top of the list.
