A vision of an ideal home

What does your ideal home look like?

My ideal home looks like any damn home that I can move into without significant work or extra costs upfront, while still being affordable in today’s stupid housing market.

That aside, I don’t know. I’ve seen so many homes online and liked different things about most of them that it’s hard to decide which things I liked most and how they would even fit together.

Starting from the outside, I’d love to have a big yard (both front and back) with a good amount of barrier trees around the edges and decent shade trees. Out here in South Dakota the wind gets nasty sometimes, and having barrier trees is especially important in winter when the snow is just blowing across the Great Plains. I’d also love it if there was some kind of lake front view from the back of the house, but that’s not a deal breaker. As for part of the exterior of the house, the back needs a covered patio of some kind, and it would be amazing if you could shut it up or screen it in (I recently saw something like this in some million dollar home in Colorado.) If the garage were detached I would want it to be large enough for some kind of workshop space.

Inside the house there would be only a couple of bedrooms and bathrooms. I would use one for an office space or maybe a hobby space depending on how the rest of the house turns out. If possible, that office space could also be lined with bookshelves and made into a little library. Also, have you seen those clips online of people building secret doors in their bookshelves? Definitely would want something like that, which could lead into a separate living room/entertainment space.

I shouldn’t forget to talk about the kitchen. Ideally, it would be spacious so that I can actually work in it when I’m trying to roll out pizza dough or something, and it needs a proper exhaust hood over the stove.

Okay, so a lot of the features I want are definitely a bit much, but some of them are more doable than others. Provided I find a basic home with enough space, I could probably add in the things I want myself and up the home value later. It’s just fun to think about this stuff sometimes.

That special dream home

Write about your dream home.

Everyone has ideas on how they would like to have unique things in their home. I’m no exception. I’ve already talked about the ideal location for where I would like to live, and the ideal office type arrangement, in previous posts. Now I can go through the rest of the house!

I’m not entirely certain I would want some absolutely massive mansion, but depending on the “sum of its parts” it might just turn out that way. The reason I wouldn’t want such a large house is because of the need to clean it. I’m not made of money and can shell out for a cleaning service, but I guess if I had the money for this dream home then I probably have the money for the service.

Anyways, let’s dive in!

The entryway to the home would have a nice open space with a large closet for guests to hang coats, and a couple of chairs or a bench that people can use to sit on when they need to get their shoes on. Oh, and a shoe cubby. Can’t forget the shoe cubby. There would be stairs on one side that go up and stairs on the other side that go down. Not sure of the exact layout or design there but you probably get the idea. Then a couple hallways that branch off.

The kitchen and dining room would share a partially open layout somewhere in the middle of the house down the hall directly ahead of the entryway. A simple living room would be next to that space, and somewhere between the two would be a way to the backyard patio.

The backyard patio would almost be like a large three-season covered space. The walls would be similar to those garages that have the two layer doors where there is an interior one that’s a screen. There would be a section of the patio that is setting up for cooking/grilling with a few different implements. A standard grill, a big flat top, and a smoker to start. There would also be some seating and small tables.

Back inside the house again, the upstairs would have bedrooms with a couple of bathrooms, one of which is in the master suite. The master suite would also be connected to that really cool two story library, which would also be connected at the first floor through the kitchen.

Downstairs would be a large entertaining space with a secondary office for streaming, because honestly if I have the kind of money for this dream house then I probably can afford to stream for fun more. The main area of the downstairs would have all of the tabletop gaming space for my friends and I to play D&D or whatever else (probably Frosthaven, which we still need to start.)

Somewhere in the mix of all of this house would be a fun slide or something, and a couple of secret rooms or passages. That would just be amazing.

Well, I’ll stop there with the dreaming because otherwise I could probably just go on writing about it for ages, and I’ve already tried to keep myself from getting TOO detailed. So that is that. Just going to leave it there for now.
