A little bit of walking every day

Daily writing prompt
How often do you walk or run?

I do at least a little bit of walking every day (oh hey, post title!)

I’m still sort of waking up as I write this post but to be honest I don’t need to be fully awake to answer a simple question like this.

If there is one thing I could do to help myself be healthier it would actually be to walk more and add jogging/running to my routine. When I worked at a “Big Red Circles” big box store on the overnight shift, I was walking 20,000+ steps every night. I think at one point I was even hitting 32,000+ steps fairly regularly. I walked so much, jogged a little bit, lifted and “threw” truck so often that I actually was in the best shape of my life for about a year. It was great being able to earn my paycheck and get in shape all at once, and it made a nice balance to my very sedentary hobbies. (If I could make the money I am today, or even more, and work out simultaneously, I probably would go back to that.)

Running is not something I do very often at all anymore, though, and I’ve never found joy in running for the sake of running. If it’s part of another activity, like a sport, then I don’t mind it!

Well, not a very thought provoking prompt and response, but that is all I can muster this morning.

Fitness for fun and good health

What’s the most fun way to exercise?

For most people, myself included, the thought of exercising for the sake of exercising is off-putting. The best way to get people to exercise is to disguise it as something fun. At least, that’s how I see it all.

For me, the most fun way to exercise is definitely some kind of sporting activity (but I’m sure some people would disagree while doing some suggestive waggling of eyebrows.) I’m not big on running up and down a field, but soccer would probably yield the most results from the exercise perspective, while golf is limiting and not full of a lot of exertion unless you’re hitting the range instead. I’ve definitely left the range with sore hands and woke up with some sore upper body muscles.

I’m calling out sports here because I can think of a couple of other activities that get people moving. Mobile games like Pokémon Go and those scavenger hunt kinds of games (like from CluedUpp Games.) I haven’t played the former much in recent years and the latter only once because it costs money and requires a group.

This all just reminds me I need to suck it up and get back to the gym more frequently.

Habits, continued…

I recently touched on my habits around spending and saving money, but I think now is a good time to talk about food and exercise habits.

When you take the time to learn about food and the way diet affects your lifestyle (and vice versa) you also look at the way society pushes different products and it becomes easy to see that not everything thats being pushed at us is actually good. We live such busy lives that we become more likely to choose convenience options when it comes to food and drink. We don’t prioritize getting enough physical activity during the day and wind up leading sedentary lives. All of this can be considered true when you look at the average gamer, and especially true when you stop to consider the activity of streaming.

After taking some time to think through all of this I realized I need to take a better stance on my own personal health in regards to eating and exercise habits. So, I’ve taken all of the information I have already, grabbing more from research, and I’ve decided that there’s no better time than now to make changes. I’ll spare you all of the nitty gritty details of how I got to this point, but I’m going to work on improving my eating and exercise habits. The ultimate goal will be to lose weight, building a little bit of muscle and strength along the way, but it will not be a short journey or a temporary change.

I probably won’t communicate a lot of progress on this journey, but if I do have tidbits to share they’ll likely be over on my Twitter account.

Stay awesome, and stay healthy.
