Goals for 2020 and beyond

Excuse the shitty hand writing you’re about to see.

A couple weeks ago I mentioned on my Twitch stream that I had picked up a small whiteboard to hang in my room, and that I was using it to list out some of my top goals. I only showed it briefly there, so I thought I should share it here for everyone to see clearly.

I picked the top 5 things I felt were going to be important to me for the immediate future and beyond, and I put them on the left.

Each goal has some supporting words and statements to help keep me thinking about the pieces that will make up the whole.

On the right side I came up with a list of things I recognized were time and/or resource suckers that I should be avoiding at all costs because they detract from my potential to complete any of my goals.

I then finished with a couple of two statements that I hope will remind and empower me to complete these goals.

Be Disciplined. Be Focused.

Wish me luck!

Better daily habits

Lately, as part of my self reflection and re-evaluation, I’ve been looking into making better choices that lead to better habits.

One of those habits I want to work on developing is getting up early and going to the gym before getting ready for work.

Today started off alright. I woke up to my alarm at 5:45ish. I laid there for a minute or two and…..decided to go back to sleep. Oops.

This led to some weird dreams. I thought I had gone through an entire day and was about to wake up and go to work on a Friday. Sadly, it was still Thursday when I did finally get out of bed.

Oh well, at least it’s not Tuesday!

A brief update of the last couple months

I’ve been fairly quiet on social media for the last month or so, and felt like posting an update.

I started typing this out on Twitter but quickly realized I was going to need more than 240 characters and also didn’t want to just post a string of tweets, so here we are!

The last couple of months have been an interesting journey. I’ve traveled to familiar places and spent time with old friends. I’ve traveled to new places and finally met friends I’ve only ever known online. I’ve started down a path for bettering my health and alreadt seen some improvements. I had time to reflect on who I was, where I’ve come from, and where I think I want to go.

During that bit of self-reflection, I decided on a couple things. First of all, goals for 2020 and beyond. I bought and hung up a small whiteboard with some goals written on it, as well as things I need to avoid going forward so that I can focus on the more important things.

In addition to that, I’m putting forth an effort to learn more and expand my knowledge. A while back I learned about a service called Masterclass and was recently reminded that it exists. So I looked into it, found some subjects I liked, and took the plunge. We’ll see where it takes me.

Now that it’s December of 2019, I’ll put together a different entry to cover more specific topics such as a proper reflection of my year and what I’m actually aiming to accomplish in the year to come.

Stay tuned!

Acknowledging my laziness

I’ve been terrible about using this blog. That’s about the gist of it!

I started off alright. I had some ideas to run with and got some things posted. Not a super strong start or very consistent but I had things posted. Then I just kind of vanished from this side, focusing on Twitter and Twitch.

I had to sit down and do some introspection of why, and I finally got to do that while on vacation.

Part of why I wasn’t getting content onto the blog is because I had somehow subconsciously convinced myself that I needed to only use this space for long form ideas. I don’t HAVE to, of course, as I’ve seen others blogs that have posts of varying lengths and depths to their content.

So, what this led to was me dreading trying to create long form content on here at all, and instead going to do something else I felt was more worthwhile.

I guess it’s time to re-evaluate my approach! (Again)

My 2018 versus my 2019 (and beyond)

I figured I should probably write up one of those “My year in review” type posts that everyone seems to make. I don’t know if it will be particularly clever or unique because of that fact, but let’s take a trip through what has happened, and then see what we come up with for what I want to see happen in the future.

2018

The year of 2018 both was and was not especially awesome. Like every other year so far in my adult life it had its ups and downs.

The early part of the year saw a new roommate join the house. I had made arrangements and urged a good friend of mine to move in with us due to circumstances I won’t talk about here as the details are his to talk about and not mine. This brought the total to four guys living in the house. Anyway, moving on.

Not long after gaining the new roommate, he also got a puppy to be friends with The Landlord’s dog. So we have two Great Danes in the house as well.

It had been a long time since I’ve been able to take any sort of vacation, but the month of May was a particularly busy month for me in 2018, because shortly after gaining the new roommate, another roommate (The Landlord as we half jokingly like to refer to him, since he’s the one with the house) and myself had a wedding to attend to out-of-state for another good friend of ours. Hurrah, an excuse to take a vacation! To my knowledge, The Landlord had only ever travelled out-of-state once before (further than a 100-mile radius from where we are since we live near three different state borders, so those don’t really count) and so I got to show him around parts of Colorado where I grew up. Timing was an issue, though, because of our slightly different work schedules so the trip wasn’t as long as we had anticipated. Made the most of it and even managed to hit up a cool D&D themed bar a couple times!

After our return home from the wedding, we saw the departure of the other roommate on his way to trying out a new path in life. We wished him well and stayed in touch because we knew he would he back eventually, as his move was only going to be temporary.

After the first half of 2018 things weren’t really that exciting for me. I stayed home a lot, played lots of video games on stream and tried to think through how I would approach my goals. I started brainstorming and laying out some plans to try new things. I even tried painting tabletop miniatures on stream for a brief period (which I need to return to eventually.)

One of the things I had tried planning out was another vacation. The roommates and I had originally planned on attending TwitchCon ’18 but unfortunately that never happened. The Landlord couldn’t get the time off he needed. So the roommate and I stuck around but still took that time off. Honestly I should have probably saved that PTO, but oh well.

The final ‘major’ thing I did for 2018 was start this blog, and that’s about it.

Friendships were changed, gained, or lost. Small amount of travelling occurred. Tried some new things. Plenty of introspection and reevaluation. 2018 may not have been a banner year for me, but it might have paved the way for certain things to come.

2019 (and beyond)

Now let us talk about what I have planned for 2019.

I want to feel more accomplished. I want to feel like I’ve made an impact. I want to reach out and build stronger connections with the people I’ve already met, and then also make new connections. Expand my network and my influence.

How do I plan to do all that? By talking to people, for starters.

I’ve been discussing with people about doing interviews or segments here on the blog. Who would be the focus? Streamers and other influencers. Getting to know them and helping them share their stories.

I’d also like to actually meet some of the people I’ve connected with through streaming. So the hope is to be able to attend TwitchCon ’19.

Another thing I’ve mentioned previously is writing a novel. I’d like to have at least a first draft written for two different stories before the end of 2019. If I can take it a step further I’d like to make contact with a freelance editor who can help me figure out some next steps for at least one of them while I shelve the other to mull over. I would treat that one more like a time capsule of my early writing skills so I can look back and compare against it.

The ultimate plan there is to have a series of novels published some day. Do I want to be some literary rockstar like Rowling? That would be amazing, but not necessary (or totally realistic.)

Boiled down, 2019 will be all about streaming, blogging, and writing with an emphasis of networking on all fronts. Maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew, but I want to see where it all goes. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Let’s all try to be awesome, and keep pushing forward.

Prioritize your needs first, duh!

Last week was busy for me at work. Running around doing final coordination for the activities going on this week and next took a toll on me, leaving me fairly drained by the end of each day. I just didn’t have the mental energy to do the things I wanted to, like stream or write. Instead I more often chose to relax. Hopefully I can get back on track with writing and streaming by the end of next week!

Where To Begin

When you first create a WordPress blog there is an entry already created. It is titled “The Journey Begins” and I thought that might be a good prompt to follow for my first official blog post here on The Dragon’s Grove. But, the real question I asked myself is “Where DO I begin?”

The way I see it, where I begin (with this post) needs to be about what the heck even motivated me to start this blog at all.

Let’s start with a question. “Why a WordPress blog?” Well, it’s simple. One of my favorite Sci-fi authors, John Scalzi, uses WordPress for his blog (which I read occasionally) and he made an entry touting the quality of the site and its premium services. His influence led me to choose WordPress.

To the next part of why I am blogging at all is because I felt I needed a place to actually house and share some of my writing. A place that could connect to other aspects of my life such as Twitch, Twitter, and Discord.

So what will I be doing with this blog? Hopefully a lot of things! It’s going to be a training ground for me. A place to document my journey, and the lessons I learn along the way.

Things I hope to include here:

  • Interviews
  • Game and book reviews
  • Life lessons and anecdotes
  • Behind the scenes of my live streaming
  • Short stories
  • Writing prompts
  • Chapter previews for novels I hope to write

If any of this sounds interesting to you then I hope you’ll follow along with me to see where this all takes me.
